Sara Zazo (Madrid, 1989) is one of the leading saxophonists of her generation, with a consolidated international profile and a strong commitment to contemporary music. Her career combines solo performance, chamber music, new creation, and specialized teaching.

As a soloist, she has premiered works by prominent composers, including “Construction in Space” by Olga Neuwirthat the Lucerne Forward Festival (2021) and “Shakti” by Diana Rotaru with the Ensemble Abrazas (2024). Her repertoire includes commissions and works of great technical and expressive demand, placing her among the most sought-after performers in her field.

Her work in chamber music and contemporary creation is equally notable. She is the co-founder and director of Altera Inde, an ensemble dedicated for over a decade to research for saxophone duo and electronics, with more than twenty premieres and a monographic CD. She also participates in groups such as Zazo–Moreno Duo, Le Sax Consort, IBSUD Quartet, ACUTE Sax Trio, Pandora Sax Quartet, and Sinfonietta CONTAINER, covering repertoires from the Renaissance to contemporary creation. She has closely collaborated with composers such as Simon Steen Andersen, Stefano Gervasoni, Georges Aperghis, Heinz Holliger, Olga Neuwirth, Peter Eötvös, and Stilianos Dimou. She has furthered her training at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse.

In the orchestral field, she has collaborated with ensembles such as the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Lemanic Modern Ensemble, Ensemble Contrechamps, Lucerne Festival Academy, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Academy, Verbier Festival, and several Spanish orchestras. She has worked under the direction of figures such as Riccardo Chailly, Simon Rattle, Matthias Pintscher, Susanna Mälki, Alan Gilbert, Jonathan Nott, and Christoph Eschenbach, performing in venues like Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, KKL Luzern, Victoria Hall, Fundación Juan March, Roulette Intermedium New York, and La Seine Musicale.

Since 2020, she has collaborated with the Swiss company 2b Company in the shows “Giselle…” and “Carmen.”, with music written especially for her by Luca Antignani.

In the pedagogical field, Sara Zazo has participated as an artist, teacher, and jury member at the Andorra Sax Fest, and in 2024, she was a guest teacher at the International University Saxophone Meeting in Mexico. She is also part of the teaching team at EIBARSAX. She has given masterclasses at institutions such as PESMD Bordeaux, Conservatorio Superior de Jaén, University of Minnesota School of Music, Conservatorio Profesional de Zamora, Conservatorio Superior de Música de Badajoz, Conservatoire de Birmingham, and Melbourne Faculty of Music, among other higher education institutions.

Trained at the Conservatorio de Badajoz (End of Degree Award) and the Conservatorio Jacques Thibaud de Burdeos, she completed her master’s degrees in Interprétation–Concert and Pédagogie Instrumentale at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne. She has received the Fritz Gerber Award 2018, the 2nd Prize Kiefer Hablitzel Stiftung 2016, and support from various Swiss foundations.

Her teaching activity at internationally prestigious institutions positions her as a reference in the training of contemporary saxophonists. She is a professor at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux Jacques Thibaud, a collaborator at PESMD Bordeaux, and a tenured professor at the Conservatoire de la Broye (Switzerland).

Named a Selmer Artist in 2018, she combines intense international activity with solid pedagogical work, establishing herself as a prominent figure in international classical – contemporary saxophone.
